The CSI franchise continues to thrive with the second season of CSI: NY, which aired on CBS during the 2005-2006 season. The kickoff episode is filled with lots of drama--but not much suspense--as the investigators delve into the death of a jewelry designer who is found wearing an $8 million diamond bra. The other case involves the shooting of a thrill seeker who is killed while climbing up a skyscraper. Though neither crime is particularly challenging for the viewer to solve, it's the little things that make the series an enjoyable viewing experience. A mosquito, for instance, provides more data on a potential killer than fingerprints or witnesses. And in a later episode, a discarded coffee mug provides the evidence to convict someone of killing a plastic surgeon. There is drama within the department as well: One of the investigators, who gets too caught up in a rape case, tampers with the forensic evidence and is told to resign from the department. While the chemistry between the main characters isn't as strong as it is with the cast of the original CSI--starring William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger--Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump, Apollo 13) makes a strong presence as lead investigator Mac Taylor. And Detective Don Flack (Eddie Cahill) gets to show more dimension in a storyline where he's trapped inside a panic room. All 24 episodes are included on this 6-disc set, which includes audio commentary on five episodes, as well as a handful of behind-the-scenes featurettes. This season also includes a little stunt casting, with David Caruso (playing his CSI: Miami character Horatio Crane) in a compelling crossover episode that involves the kidnapping of a young girl. Both strong silent types, Horatio and Mac make for a wonderful team, despite their different methods. --Jae-Ha Kim

The first sequel to CSI offered the 60 million dedicated viewers to the initial series a location change, as the sequel is set in the subtropical Miami. However, in one episode of CSI: Miami, a cold-blooded murderer brought the investigation to New York to find the killer. This development gave grounds for another change of scenery, which gave the viewers a chance to see the nitty-gritty indifference of the unsympathetic Big Apple's criminals. The mood in CSI: NY is far grimmer and more distant from humanity than its predecessors, as the bluish tone of the photography enhances the cold and unfeeling mood of this series murderous trail. The first disc of this set of discs offers an opportunity for the audience to experience the initial episode from CSI: Miami that sets up CSI: NY. In this episode the forensic-analyst, Caine (David Caruso) of... I found it very easy to get into CSI: NY, even more so than Vegas or Miami--I think it had something to do with the incredible cast that was assembled for New York. Gary Sinise is one of my favorite actors, and I found his character Mac to be a much more likeable lead CSI than either Grissom or Horatio (Grissom has been varying degrees of antisocial and oblivious over the seasons, and Horatio gets more than a little bit aggravating sometimes with the way he talks and stands, arms akimbo, while the other CSIs process the scene.) Don't get me wrong, I love Vegas and Miami, but New York has become my definite favorite. I liked the fact that, in this CSI, the viewers got some of the characters' backgrounds early on, rather than waiting forever (such as the 5 season wait to find out why in the world Sarah from... The show no longer is as dark as it was during its first season, the storyline involving Mac Taylor's mourning of his wife's death on 9/11 has disappeared, Dr. Hawks is now in the field, instead of performing autopsies, and Aidan Burn is fired and replaced Lindsay Monroe. The producers seem to have stuck to the CSI formula for 2/3 of the season to allow the dust to settle. The last few episodes bring in some interesting character developments: the sexual chemistry between Danny and Lindsay, the relationship between Danny and his brother, the wrapping up of the rapist storyline, Stella having a relationship with a man that turns violent, and the revelation of a lighter side to Mac. In all, Season 2 is a good year of cases and glimpses of what direction this show wants to go in. |
